教材是创设“没有尺子测量课桌长度”的需求情境，而孙特则是让孩子去测量一颗大树的外围，驱动学生重演尺子科技发展史中哪些关键的步骤（兴趣驱动）：身体尺-物品尺-表刻度的尺子-统一长度标准-现代尺子，引领学生了解尺子技术发展史。

利用身体的某个部位“拃”测量，发现不同的人测量的拃数是不一样，同一个人测量多次也可能出现误差。学生发现“拃”这种测量工具不准确，从而想要用确定长度的物体来作为测量的单位，这是设计一把尺子的第一步。

孙特提供给学生小方块和小木棍，让他们自由的选择材料和测量对象，让其在自主学习中主动发现矛盾，从而激发学生想要改进尺子的兴趣和思维。
